About the Program

The NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis (“Postdoc”) is a vibrant, engaging community that values psychoanalytic pluralism, ongoing dialogue among the various psychoanalytic traditions, and respect for the candidate as a mature adult, accomplished clinician and scholar. We have always believed that the best atmosphere in which to pursue these principles is a university setting with an established tradition of intellectual inquiry, freedom of thought, interdisciplinary exchange, and a commitment to research.

The Postdoctoral Program offers a diverse curriculum including modern Freudian, Interpersonal, Relational, and Independent orientations, and is unique in offering comprehensive training in each of these approaches. Candidates are encouraged to sample courses and supervisors from each of the orientations although they are also free to concentrate in any one of them. Each orientation features an internationally known teaching faculty and outstanding clinical supervisors who have made a significant contribution to the field of psychoanalysis.

The Postdoctoral Program was the first analytic institute to be fully accredited by The Accreditation Council for Psychoanalytic Education Inc. Currently, with over 600 graduates, Postdoc is the largest psychoanalytic training program in the country, and also offers advanced specialization in Trauma Studies, Couple & Family Therapy, Group Therapy, and Clinical Supervision.
